Behind the stories

I'm K. M. Rivera, a writer and mother who usually writes in the quieter spaces around everyday life—between the routines, late at night, or whenever a scene refuses to leave me alone. I've always been drawn to the messier parts of people: grief, longing, loyalty, resentment, tenderness, and the choices we make when there isn't a clean answer.


I'm especially interested in characters who are contradictory and difficult to understand at first. Dostoevsky is the writer I return to most, partly because his characters are allowed to be uncomfortable, complicated, and deeply human. That's something I want in my own work too. I don't want everyone on the page to be easily explained. I want them to feel like people you keep thinking about after the scene ends.

ON THE PAGE

I'm a reader before I'm a writer. Dostoevsky is the author I return to most, and White Nights has stayed with me for years. I'm drawn to characters who are flawed, restrained, obsessive, loyal, difficult, or simply trying to make sense of themselves.


My own stories tend to start the same way: with one person, one feeling, or one image that won't leave me alone.

OFF THE PAGE

Outside of writing, I'm a mother, I lift weights, take photographs, and bake whenever I have an excuse to. I adore autumn, stormy weather, quiet spaces, old things, folklore, and anything that feels a little lived-in rather than polished.
